Recently, I acquired a netbook-compact, easy to use, nine hours of battery life-and it came with 10 GB free online storage. "Great!" I shrieked inwardly. That with my also recently acquired one terabyte external hard drive, will soon render my Delete button obsolete.
But what's really going on here. Sure, I fancy myself a collector, archivist, keeper of keepsakes, amasser of memorabilia, some might say pack rat, as much as the next guy. But that's just me. Actually, no it's not. Storage technology has been catching up quietly, and now it has us in its clutches.
Welcome to the world of Life Caching: collecting, storing and displaying one's entire life, for private use, or for friends, family, even the entire world to gape at. Millions of people-bloggers and twits alike-are digitally indexing their thoughts, rants and anything else, online, disclosing the virtual caches of their daily lives, exciting or boring.
With the ample availability of affordable storage space, blogging has hit the masses. Nokia, Microsoft, Google, Apple, Samsung and more have put in place an infrastructure for Life Caching so that GENERATION C and 'Generation Digital' can cache every gasp of their existence.
A brief, random selection of some of the latest LIFE CACHING initiatives, to get you going:
Microsoft's SenseCam is a badge-sized wearable camera that captures VGA images onto FLASH memory.
In addition, sensor data such as movement, light level and temperature is recorded every second. Similar to an aircraft "Black Box" accident recorder it is miniaturised for the human body. The SenseCam is part of Microsoft's experiment in lifetime storage.
Google's Gmail setting new standards of infinite and ever-increasing free storage of email messages, files and everything else, expect free online storage to become the new craze for zillions of Life Caching consumers. In Google's own words: "Don't throw anything away: 1,000 megabytes of free storage so you'll never need to delete another message."
And never forget the iPod: currently at 160 GB of storage space, so even the biggest music fanatics will be able to forever build, store and carry their entire life collection of music, video, data, and . . . ? in their hip pocket. Next?
Capture and store, capture and store . . . from Malaysia to Hong Kong, key cord memory sticks and mini-MP3 players are the new Asian fashion accessory: with sticks storing gigabytes of content, consumers can wear their entire 'digital life files' around their neck, and they do, too: music, movies, documents, photos, and presentations.
Life Caching goes mobile. Sticks, MP3 players and camera phones boast increased storage capacities, functionality, and quality, and consumers will soon be able to show, play, and share their entire life with whomever, wherever. Millions already prefer to store their entire life collections of music, pictures, and texts on a USB stick, dangling from their necks.
And Spacelocker gives you fast, reliable access to all your life caching data. Log in, and from a single site meet new friends, keep in touch with members of your friends list, and connect all your online stuff.
